My friend has dyslexia ISBN: 9781844580958
Edwards, Nicola
Published by Chrysalis Children's Books (My Friend series), 2004
Rachel and Bella are best friends, and before Rachel's dyslexia was diagnosed, Bella thought she was rather quiet and sad. Indeed she was, as her learning disabilities had lowered her self-esteem and made her worried that people would laugh. Reading and writing were both problems, and looking back, Rachel's mum could see symptoms of her dyslexia from a very young age. Dyslexia is explained in clear terms, and with the help of a diagram, the causes are given (so far as they are known). We see Rachel being diagnosed by an educational psychologist, and we meet her grandmother, who may be dyslexic too. Rachel is helped at school and after school by a tutor, by using computers, and by learning with the senses. She also uses tapes and has learned touch-typing. This is a positive story, showing the many things that can be done to help dyslexic children, one of which is the use of Read Regular - a dyslexic-friendly font, printed on cream or coloured paper - by which this book has been produced. Fact boxes, a glossary, an index, two pages of 'Questions People Ask' and a list of useful organisations, including websites, will make this accessible book very useful in schools.
