Since having had meningitis, Carey has suffered what she calls black outs. A twice-daily tablet keeps these under control, but Carey doesn't seem to understand what the black outs mean. It is late in the story when someone explains that she has a form of epilepsy. Carey's parents, both of whom are famous, leave her on their Scottish holiday island in the charge of her supposed half sister while they are off to remote places. Hannah, however, is unkind, and, moreover, has some very strange friends. Carey decides to run away with her pony and dog and make her way to her gran in Yorkshire. How she does so and her adventures on the way make the bulk of the story. Her epilepsy comes into the plot at several points, and plucky Carey refuses to let her disability get the better of her. Carey is 14, but the book will appeal to a younger age group. A readable mystery adventure.
