Hannah's ghost ISBN: 09073349633
Merrick, Anne
Published by Spindlewood, 1996

Not only does Hannah have a remarkable imagination, but she is also lonely. With older sisters and a best friend who has moved away and a widowed dad who is always busy, she finds herself making up stories to while the time. Sometimes these 'stories' get her into trouble at school, and then, horrifyingly, one of her stories materialises as a ghost. Looking rather like a circus clown, Morphy is a sad/comic ghost with a nice line in dotty phraseology, and Hannah tries to exorcise him by telling further stories about him. These only get poor Morphy into more trouble, and it is only when Patsy begins to show interest in Hannah and believes in her ghost that the girls can exorcise him. This is done by Hannah's writing out Morphy's story and giving him a happy ending back in the circus where he belongs. Lonely ghosts and lonely little girls can be helped by understanding companionship. Superb writing; evocative descriptions of the small seaside town where Hannah lives.
