Wenny has wings ISBN: 9780571223534
Carey, Janet Lee
Published by Faber & Faber, 2005
Will (11) and his little sister Wenny (7) have been hit be a truck as they cross the road. Wenny dies, but Will survives after having been technically dead for ten minutes. During that time, he has an out-of-body experience. He and Wenny fly through a dark tunnel and then into a wonderful light. Wenny flies on with an angelic persona, but Will thinks about his parents and comes back. This is indicative of their personalities - Will the thoughtful, responsible one and Wenny the impulsive tomboy, always in trouble but lovable with it. In a series of letters that Will writes to Wenny, we learn of the aftermath to this tragedy and how he and his parents handle it. Anger with Wenny is one of his early responses, and as Will works through the stages of grief, his parents seem unable to move on. Even an expected new baby doesn't help their deteriorating relationship. When Will is finally able to tell them of his experience with Wenny and of his belief that they would have preferred that he die rather than Wenny, things begin to fall into place. A sensitive counsellor helps Will, and there are signs that all will ultimately come right although never the same. There are moments of humour because Will's letters have an ironic touch as he gets himself and his chum into the kinds of situations that Wenny used to specialise in. Very well written and with no mawkishness at all, this is an intelligent novel.
