The Girl With Two Dads ISBN: 9781405292436
Elliott, Mel
Published by Egmont UK Limited, 2019
Pearl has made a new friend at school, Matilda, and the two girls find an instant rapport: they like doing the same things. But when Pearl sees Matilda saying goodbye to her dad at school the next day, she realises that this is a different dad, which is confusing. 'Where's your mum', she asks. Matilda matter-of factly says, 'One mum and one dad isn't what every family has. I have two dads who love each other.' Pearl accepts this easily, and that is that, until Matilda says that her dads would like her to come to dinner with them the next day. What excitement! Pearl can hardly wait, and she convinces herself that because there are two men in the family, perhaps they will have only cakes and sweets. It's disappointing, though, when they have healthy food, are told not to jump on the bed, and have to obey RULES! Back at home, Pearl complains of all this and tells her mum that Matilda's house is dull and un-cool. 'In fact, they are really boring...just like you and dad!' Funny and very 'cool' indeed, this is a good, easy-going explanation of single parenthood, and will help to make this form of parenting more accessible. The illustrations are great too, lots of humorous drawings to add to the fun.
