Tell Me about When Moms and Dads Go to Jail (Tell Me about Jail) ISBN: 9781785928079
Goozh, Judi and Jeweler, Sue
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2018
While this super information book shows us a child with a father who has been sent to prison, it is useful for children with mums who must go to prison too. The book starts with the boy and his parents out walking. A police car comes along and when the policemen see his dad, they arrest him, complete with handcuffs. The boy is very confused and upset and has lots of questions for his mum. These questions are fully answered and are very relevant to the the kinds of things that children will need to know in such circumstances: Where is dad going? Why do people go to jail? What does jail look like? Where does he sleep? Eat? What does he do all day? Is he safe? The boy goes on to ask should I tell friends? And, can he see his dad? And these, too, are answered honestly and in detail. The simple sentences and excellent photos give information in an easily understood form. The only thing that can't be answered completely is when he asks how soon his dad will be coming home. There is lots of good information at the back of the book for parents, professionals and care-givers, but as this is an American publication, the books and websites recommended may not be of much use here. However, overall, this is an excellent publication with lots going for it. Available from Amazon, from bookshops, and from the publisher: www.jkp.com.
