In the quiet of her home, the little girl hears all the different noises in each room. The kitchen has the bubble and rattle from a pan, the rumble burble of the kettle, the ping of the microwave, and the clatter from the sink where dad is washing up. This family consists of dad, a baby brother and the little girl herself. There is no sign of mum, and dad is definitely in charge. As we move through the noises of supper, the evening in the living room, her bath in the bathroom, and her bedtime with her dad's 'deep quiet voice', we hear all the noises both loud and soft that the little girl is aware of. This happy, ordinary family do ordinary family things, but the emphasis here is on the everyday noises that surround us and of which we are often unaware. The little girl is, though, and through her eyes we see what it may be like for partially sighted children whose hearing is attuned to the noises that many of us pay little attention to. There is no mention of sight problems, and the book will be of interest to all children - a truly inclusive production. The illustrations are great fun with little noise labels on each thing that is making that noise. The dialogue is simply the little girl telling us what is making the various sounds she hears so clearly, and each time she enters a different room, she says 'Sssh! Listen, what's that noise?' The repetition of this phrase and the little girl's joy in her life and all around her makes for a book that will be demanded over and over. The pictures are a perfect match to the simple text. Excellent!
