Blindness (Young Explorer: What's it Like?) ISBN: 9780431112237
Royston, Angela
Published by Heinemann Library, 2005
A good basic explanation of sight problems for KS1 and older pupils, the print is large and clear, and the photos and one diagram (of the eye) add a lot to the whole. Short, two-page chapters give a surprising amount of information on things such as: how sight works, causes of blindness and partial sightedness, living with the condition, using a white cane or a guide dog, help in crossing roads, ways of reading, how museums can help the blind, special gardens, working life, sport, etc. Computers and talking books are mentioned, but as the edition I saw was printed in 2005, there is no mention of Kindles, etc. and the difference they can make to the blind and partially sighted. It is possible there is a newer edition by now. All in all, an excellent start to learning about how people cope with the disability, and its positive approach is most worthwhile.
