The illustrations alone would make this book worthwhile! The crayon, child-like and very expressive pictures add greatly to the text, which without them might be a tad 'wordy'. Nevertheless, both are very necessary to this book about jealousy and anger. It begins by explaining about the little green goblin who lives inside each of us. When he is asleep, he is rather a cute little goblin, but when he wakes up, his eyes turn from blue to green, his nose grows, and he breaths out a green, smelly mist! This is jealousy, and it can happen for a lot of different reasons. We learn one of them from Theo, who hears his Gran downstairs one morning and wants to be the first to see her. But sister Jodie has got there first, and Theo's goblin sets him raging. He pulls Jodie's hair and screams at her. This extreme reaction is partly down to the fact that the author is an expert on autism, and she may well intend this to be an autistic child. However, the story is highly useful for non-autistic children too - those who are capable of great anger for small reasons. Theo's mum takes him upstairs and when he has calmed down, she helps him to understand about the little green goblin that is jealousy and how it makes him feel. She also has some good coping strategies that will help Theo learn to train his goblin, and these might well be of use to parents dealing with anger issues. Theo learns how to send his goblin back to sleep, and he also realises that other people are sometimes jealous of him and have their own goblins to cope with. Jealousy and anger often go hand in hand, and in learning to cope with both, children will mature in important ways. A beautifully published book with lots going for it.
