Hospital (First Time series) ISBN: 9781846433368

One of the strengths of this picture book is that it shows lots of different children having different procedures. There is a boy with a broken arm who must have an x-ray and a cast; there is a girl with a cut on her head, who has butterfly strips and a check-up for concussion; there is a girl having an unspecified op who will stay the night and is shown being given her bed, having her blood pressure taken, putting on a wristband, and having a blood test. We also see her being reassured by her mum before the op and having food after she feels better. A boy is already in hospital and is being visited by his dad and brother. We see them in the play room with the play leader, and we see the main little girl who has had the op saying goodbye and going home. The emphasis, quite rightly, is on brightness and positivity, and the colourfulness of the pictures adds much to this. Simple text is dialogue-based, and as the pages are laminated and wipeable, it will be particularly good for use on children's wards. Also excellent for kids about to have a hospital experience with much detail that shows up in the pictures. A simple glossary ends the book. This series is a winner!
