Racism (Talk About) ISBN: 9780750249355
Senker, Cath
Published by Wayland (Publishers) Ltd, 2008
In the first chapter we lean what racism is and something of the history of how it began. One of the strengths of this book is its worldwide approach to the problem and the explanations of how racism has become so endemic. The examples given are not just from places one would expect, but cover the whole spectrum of where racism exists and why. Chapter 2 asks 'Why are people racist? and covers such topics as stereotypes, scapegoating, cultural differences, and the impact of the media. Chapter 3 on what racists do, covers problems in schools, in mixed race families, and in organisations with racist intent, and specific instances are given of violence in Germany and the problems that politicians with racist tendencies can cause. Race riots are covered, as are the attempts to relieve the causes of the riots. Chapter 4 talks about 'hidden racism' where people can become unintentionally racist. Teachers may not realise they are treating black children differently from white; in the police force, there may be institutional racism; in business, people of different races may be thought to be of lesser ability. Hidden racism may have been partly responsible for the slow response to Hurricane Katrina, when black people in the New Orleans area suffered so much more than white people. The fifth chapter is on religious prejudice. Judaism and Islam are covered particularly as is the importance of learning about other religions. One of the interesting 'Talk About' boxes in this chapter gives the pros and cons of going to faith schools. Chapter 6 talks about migrants and the problems they have. it also covers asylum seekers and refugees and their problems in settling in school and at home. The final chapter asks 'What can we do about racism?' Lists of dos and don'ts and coping strategies of what to do if you experience racist attacks are useful. Besides the 'Talk About' boxes, which give good scope for discussion, there are also Fact boxes for statistical information and 'It happened to me' boxes which give racist problems experienced by individual children. A glossary, an index, and a comprehensive list of books, websites, and helplines make up the rest of this interesting book.
