Mole's Sunrise ISBN: 9781406304749
Fox-Davies, Sarah and Willis, Jeanne
Published by Walker, 2011
Mole has never seen the sunrise, so when his friend Vole starts out before dawn one morning, he offers to take him to the lake to see it. On arrival, they find Rabbit, Squirrel and Sparrow, also there to share in the treat. As the sun slowly rises, the animal friends describe to Mole what they are seeing, comparing the sun to the yolk of an egg, the clouds to ice cream and custard, and, finally, the sun becomes like 'a shiny gold button' full of heat that melts 'the moody clouds'. These are all things that Mole can relate to, being blind, and he thanks his friends for the wonderful experience of 'seeing' the sunrise. Both the illustrations and the text are beautiful and quite moving, the illustrations full of soft, fuzzy colours and lovable animals. As the animals see and describe the sunrise, so we see it too in the pictures. A very special picture book.
