My (Worst) Best Sleepover Party ISBN: 9781897187203
Morgan, Anna and Turkienicz, Rachel
Published by Second Story Press, 2007
Rose is terrible excited about her sleepover birthday party. She and her mum plan all sorts of exciting things for the girls to do, and when the invitations are given, her eleven chums seem pleased too. So what could possibly have made Hailey and Bailey, the class leaders, announce that they wouldn't come to the party if Rose's best friend Stacy comes? Rose is appalled. She tries to think of a reason, but there isn't one. This is a control thing, and Hailey and Bailey are determined to take control of Rose's party. Rose confides her unhappiness to mum, who goes to the teacher with the problem. This makes the situation far worse when Rose is made out to be a snitch. Stacy and her mother must be brought into the equation, and when the two girls are sent to Coventry for Rose's suppposed lie- telling, the sleepover is in danger. The solution is not easy, but Rose learns: 'Your best sleepover party is when you know you did what your inside told you was right, even if it doesn't end up being the party you imagined.' This is a subtle, really horrid form of bullying, and the ending is only a semi-happy one; the two girls don't get there come-uppance. But it is truthful and all too believable. Some weaknesses in the writing style don't actually matter in a highly readable story. Available in the UK from Amazon or from Gazelle Books: 01524 68765 or sales@gazellebooks.co.uk
