Rabbit Ears ISBN: 9780747589662
Rankin, Laura and Stewart, Amber
Published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, 2007
Hopscotch is a little rabbit who knows what he likes - his toy, Rabbity, building block towers, and chocolate cake. He does not like 'lumpy pudding' or wet paws, and he particularly does not like having his ears washed. Baths are okay, but Hopscotch will go to great lengths to avoid ear washing, hiding them in all sorts of funny and imaginative ways and even holding them down. Mum tries a chocolate cake bribe, but to no avail. When big cousin Bobtail comes for a visit, they have a terrific time together, but Hopscotch is astounded to find that Bobtail actually washes his own ears! And, furthermore, doesn't seem to mind! Ever admiring of his big cousin, and wanting to be considered old enough to go to Bobtail's house overnight, Hopscotch begins to practice on Rabbity, and soon learns to wash his own ears. He and mummy sing a little song about ear washing, and Hopscotch learns that he can enjoy something he once hated. This is delightful. Both story and illustration have a warmth and cosiness and humour that is redolent of family life. Little people who loathe having their hair washed will enjoy Hopscotch's saga and may well determine to follow suit.
