Why Do I Have To?: A Book for Children Who Find Themselves Frustrated by Everyday Rules ISBN: 9781843108917
Leventhal-Belfer, Laurie and Mountaini-Klovdahl, Luisa
Published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2008
Aimed at children with Asperger's syndrome but useful also for children easily frustrated, this book provides short chapters on a number of different situations that children may find baffling. Main sections include: Rules that may be frustrating at home, Rules that may be frustrating about friends, and Rules that may be frustrating about school. Sub-sections answer problems such as 'Why do I have to sit at the table to eat when I am not hungry? Why do I have to say 'thank you' for a present that I do not like? and Why do I have to ask my teacher if it is OK to leave the room? Each of these short sub-sections start by sympathizing with how the child feels and then go on to explain why a rule exists and to give coping strategies. Simple black and white line illustrations give a 'before' and 'after' story. There is good advice to parents on how to use the book, and appendices give space for children to fill in their own frustrations and ideas for how to cope, as well as a detailed goal chart.
