A dragon in your heart ISBN: 9781853027017
LeBlanc, Sophie
Published by Jessica Kingsley, 1999
When Sophie LeBlanc was diagnosed with breast cancer, she realised her five year old daughter was deeply affected by all that was happening around her. This book, with naive, child-like drawings and lots of information, was written for her. It chronicles at some length Laura's mum's fight with cancer. Laura's fears about her mum take the form of a monster who brings on terrible nightmares. Thorough explanations and great understanding from parents and grandmother help, but the dreams keep recurring until near the end of mum's treatment, Laura kills her nightmare monster with a sword. In its place comes a wonderful dragon (super picture, this), and the dragon tells her that she has been so brave that she will always have 'a dragon in her heart'. Mum is in remission, but Laura knows she may have to be brave again. The story is quite long, and there is a great deal of information to absorb, but this is the sort of book that can be read again and again for reassurance.
