Owl at the vet ISBN: 9780434954339
Nicoll, Helen and Pienkowski, Jan
Published by Heinemann, 1999
Meg makes a magic spell to get herself a telephone. It works, but Owl flies into the wire and must be taken to the vet with a broken wing. Meg dresses up as a nurse to assist in the operation, and then she and Owl have a bad night together in the animal hospital. During the next day, Owl is alternately in pain, fed-up, and bored, but when Meg and Mog bring him a mouse turnover, he begins to feel better. They send him a special request on the hospital radio, and his friends are quite envious. When he is finally better, he flies home. There are enough parallels with a real stay in hospital to make this very reassuring, and the brilliant colours in Pienkowski's illustrations give it instant appeal.
