Granny Torrelli makes soup ISBN: 9780747564683
Creech, Sharon
Published by Bloomsbury, 2004
Rosie and Bailey are best buddies. They live next door to each other and have been close since birth. Now they are 12 and beginning to learn new things about each other. Bailey is partially-sighted; he can see shapes dimly, but little else. Rosie tells the story in the first person, most of it to her Italian Granny Torrelli, a great maker of soup and pasta, and we learn first of all that Rosie is furious with Bailey. It takes some time for Granny to find out why, but it finally develops that Rosie has learned Braille, believing that Bailey will be pleased. He isn't! Braille is one skill he has that Rosie doesn't. Rosie has lots to learn about relationships, and Granny Torrelli is just the one to help. Bailey's sight is never an issue, but Rosie's sometimes ham-fisted attempts to help him are. The tone is laugh-out-loud funny, but poignant too. Granny Torrelli is a character who will linger long in the memory, and Bailey couldn't be more ordinary and fun.
