Paddiwak is a 'prince of a cat, a posh job (a bit of a snob)', and he does not take kindly to the arrival of Cosy, 'a laugh of a cat, a dumpling cat', and he runs away: I'm never, never, never going home, said he. Both of the cats are sad and lonely, but when the rain comes, Paddiwak returns through his cat flap and ends up curled around Cosy in the airing cupboard. Jealousy is softened by the fact they are cats, and the outstanding richly detailed pictures as well as the sophisticated poetry make this a winner.
